Undoubtedly, significant steps in the argicultural sector have taken place over the last years with an associated intense consideration at both social and political levels to resolve environmental issues, protect consumer’s health and, in general, to secure the future of the agricultural sector. Within this framework, a strategic plan and a govermental policy addressing environment-friendly agricultural practices together with actions to assess and develop protocols for the raising product quality have been generated.

Besides enhancing measures for enrionmental protection, the EC common agricultural policy has focused on developing specific agricultural protocols to aid the production of a new generation of high quality products which will be safe as they will be produced under certified and controlled procedures.

Indeed, major food retailers have started to ask their suppliers for products which have been produced on the basis of a particular protocol constructed by the retailers themselves.

Overall, the global trend is oriented towards a novel agroenvironmental model, whose key elements should be polymorphism, quality and safety, aiming towards promoting and consolidating local products with particular emphasis paid on their intrinsic characteristics.

The numerous benefits resulting from applying the specific production protocols contribute to the improvement of product quality and safety. Product farming according to the specific protocol rules and demands will secure and promote all those characteristics which make the individual product unique.

In particular, benefits concern the enhancement of all positive elements a certain farm business strives to achieve through eliminating their counterparts. The consequences of applying a specific agricultural protocol correlate not only with the farm business internal organisation (internal benefits) but also with the external issues (external benefits) such as customers, supplies, social environment, govermental and other interested bodies.

Some examples of internal benefits are the following:

  • addition of positive elements through improving communication and teamworking between staff, minimizing input to the product by introducing novel technologies for maximising financial outcome, securing agricultural crop yield and grower income, avoiding delays in problem recognition and resolution and organising production on a rational basis.
  • elimination of negative elements stemming from environmental management, observance to the law, customer/supplier services, financial waste, staff safety and communication etc.

External benefits will arise from:

  • addition of positive elements by improving image via certification acqiusition, applying farming practices in accordance with enrvironmental rules, satisfying customer needs, becoming competitive, ensuring product reliability, engaging into business actions in special markets requiring production protocol application etc
  • elimination of negative elements such as customer complaints, non-observance to law and practices related to the end-product quality characteristics and environmental management issues.

In conclusion, it is immediately evident that application of a customer-tailored and certified production protocol will establish a framework of rules which will contribute to the farming and production of high quality products in accordance with contemporary trends that market demands.
