Burke Agro is an independent agriculture development branch of Sol Organica, S.A. and is made up of a dedicated team of agronomists focused on improving sustainable farming practices with smallholder farmers to ensure quality, productivity, certifications, and a consistent and transparent purchase process. The company offers credit and access to organic inputs to marginalized and emerging farmers. Burke Agro also sources and sells a wide variety of organic fresh fruit to international markets.

Burke Agro is on the ground every day with individual producers and cooperatives to encourage certifications and farmer development programs that benefit Nicaraguan farming families and their communities. Access to credit is one of the gaps in the food system that Burke Agro bridges through its credit program.

In a continued effort to support the growth and livelihood of regional smallholder farmers, Burke Agro has developed an innovative organic input distribution program that directly benefits smallholder farmers and increases their yearly incomes through improved yields and decreased costs.

Research conducted by the Burke Agro field team revealed that farmers lacked financing for and access to organic inputs during non-harvest seasons. With no access to organic inputs, farmers were applying chemical fertilizers to add nutrients to their soil. Continuous use of these chemical fertilizers depletes essential soil nutrients and minerals that are naturally found in fertile soil. The result was mismanaged farms with lower yields and a direct loss of income for the families.

Burke Agro’s organic input program promotes an approach to farming that helps enrich soils, preserve carbon stocks, protect watersheds and support a healthy ecosystem that is more resilient to climate change.

Using soil and water samples, Burke Agro’s agronomists are able to identify the appropriate blend of organic fertilizers necessary to boost productivity and increase the health of farmland. Estimates suggest that some of the more vulnerable producers, those living off the production reaped from a single hectare of land, have been able to double their yearly yields due to the application of high-quality organic fertilizers.

In addition to working with farmers to grow and harvest the highest quality organic fruit for finished products, Burke Agro also sells its own line of heirloom fresh fruit varieties to international markets. The company’s agronomists and quality assurance department work with the Institute of Sanitary and Agricultural Protection (IPSA) to inspect 100% of raw materials purchased from farmers. Farms are in the process of FSA certification and are managed under GAP (Good Agricultural Practices). The farms are also USDA Organic and comply with international standards that include routine audits, inspections, and rigorous record keeping.

Burke Agro offers a wide range of heirloom fruit varieties indigenous to Nicaragua. All of the fresh fruit available for export is Non-GMO and Certified Organic.

The development of smallholder farmers is an integral part of Burke Agro's mission. As such, grants and projects are not viewed as isolated initiatives, but rather are woven directly into the company’s operations to assure short term coherence and long term sustainability. We have deep meaningful partnerships with brands, manufacturers and development agencies that share our vision and passion for social and environmental impact.
