With its 900 reefer plugs, the Container Terminal makes the port of Taranto the ideal choice for companies involved in the growing business of fruit and vegetables traffic in the Mediterranean. With its effective railway links to the North of Italy and the Centre and North of Europe the Terminal allows rapid transfer of perishable goods. Having undergone renovation works, the Container Terminal is able to operate cranes able to move containers up to the ship’s 24th row. Its current depth is -14,5 - 15,5 m. Thanks to the scheduled dredging works, which will deepen the seabed up to -16.5 mt depth, new generation container ships will be able to dock.

Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea - Port of Taranto

The Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea is a public agency whose main task is to identify, programme, co-ordinate and control commercial and industrial activities carried out in the port area.

The Port of Taranto is one of the biggest Italian ports in terms of traffic volume.
Container handling activity is carried out on the container terminal, a common-user facility available to all containership operators and an important hub for services to the Near, Middle and Far East, the Americas and Europe. It features 900 reefer container plugs perfect for fresh produce traffic.

In line with the Port Network Authority’s strategy of encouraging more commercial traffic, the Logistic Park was built within the port area. Extending over an area of about 200.000 sqm, the logistic park is conceived as a center for interchange among different means of transportation (rail, road, sea) and a center for goods services, where all the operators involved in the process are integrated by means of operative and computerized systems.

Furthermore, the port benefits from the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), located within the port area and in the areas which are economically connected to port itself.
The SEZ will feature:
  • Extra tax concessions;
  • Facilitations to attract the biggest international players who are strategically important for maritime transport and handling goods in the Mediterranean ports;
  • Speeding up public and private investments;
  • Simplification of the procedures.
