Ausstellerprofil

In 1991 the Futuragri cooperative was founded. Fifty farms that intended to diversify their production, which up until that time had been focused on industrial tomatoes, which continue to be one of the leading crops of the Daunia area of Italy (northern Apulia). In 1995 the first one-thousand square metres of space was dedicated to the processing of asparagus. And this success story has continued ever since. Currently, Futuragri, which has been a producers organization since 1994, has a processing plant covering about ten thousand square metres and an associate cooperative, the Valdichiana, in the province of Arezzo, where the famous popone melon is produced.

From the original 500 hectares of industrial tomatoes over its twenty years of production, the cooperative proceeded to cultivate its current 1,500 hectares of various horticultural products. The entire production is planned, controlled, certified and tracked in every phase, right through to the end consumers. For years Futuragri has operated a toll-free helpline that allows anyone to ask questions on any qualitative aspect of their products. At least forty hectares are dedicated to starter crops, especially melons. We begin with traditional varieties in greenhouses, and end with the melons of the Valdichiana and newer varieties.   Over the course of the years, melons have become one of the four main products of Futuragri. But Futuragri's range of “Fresh” produce does not end with the four main crops of asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower and melons. Over the years we have diversified further, with other vegetables typical of this zone: turnip greens, chicory, parsley, chard, spinach, Roman cauliflower and more. All these products can boast certifications of the highest quality standards. The individual associates are members of Globalgap. In the last five years, we have give great attention to processing vegetables in trays, for both first range and fourth range vegetables. Some are ready for microwave cooking. Twenty percent of the total production in terms of value is now produced in a tray or packet. Asparagus have been a standard-bearing crop throughout the history of the company.

The unrelenting search for varieties suitable to the dry climate of the Daunia zone of sourthern Italy led in the early 1990s to the exceptional result of an asparagus that could be eaten right down to the bottom. The company is capable of producing asparagus packaged in all ways, from the microwaveable tips to the traditional 500-gram bunch. The video-calibrating and packaging lines enable the production of about 120,000 bunches of asparagus in just one day. 7 Futuragri was the first company in Italy not to add water to asparagus. Indeed, there is a time-old habit of immersing bunches of asparagus in water to make them heavier, often resulting in woody asparagus that gives off an unpleasant odour. Above all, with warmer temperatures, the added water causes enormous damage to consumers and distributors alike. By opting to not add water, Futuragri is willing to lose 15 percent of the weight in order to guarantee an excellent product with a prolonged shelf-life and no unpleasant odours.
