Produktbeschreibung

One of Freshfel’s most important missions is to stimulate the consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables by defending the image of the product and emphasising its healthy assets, its huge diversity of taste and texture. In this respect, the Freshfel Promotion, Communication & Image Committee aims at sharing and exchanging new ideas and best practice examples with regard to fresh produce promotion, and look at ways of increasing consumption, with a view to reversing the stagnating, and in some cases decreasing, trend experienced throughout Europe. Through its actions, the group contributes to the fight against obesity, heart diseases and cancer, which threaten our modern society.
The group gathers several Freshfel members, as well as a number of non-Freshfel members, active in the promotion of fruit and vegetables at national level. This past year, the group has followed the introduction of the new framework for agriculture promotion programmes. The new framework will increase EU funding for these programmes from roughly 60 million EUR at present to 200 million EUR in 2020, of which the major part should remain with the fresh fruit and vegetable sector. The revised scheme will also raise the EU contribution in the total programme up to ca 75% and make it easier to put European programmes in place with partners from different Member States. It will also keep the possibility for undertaking both promotion and information campaigns on the internal market and in non-EU countries.

Freshfel is also a member of the European Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health, to profile fresh produce as one of the solutions to address the alarming growing rate of obesity and related illnesses. Since its creation in 2005, the main purpose of the platform has been to conduct open and informal discussions to examine ways of achieving binding commitments aimed at tackling the obesity epidemic and at addressing diet-related chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease.
Over the eight years that the platform has existed, close to 300 commitments have been submitted by its members. They cover a very wide range of activities, including actions in key fields such as consumer information, labelling, education, physical activity promotion, marketing, advertising targeting children and product reformulation.
Freshfel’s current active commitments are the Fresh Times, the Consumption Monitor and the support to the EU School Fruit Scheme (SFS). This last commitment entails a unique collaboration between the public health sector (EPHA – European Public Health Alliance, and EHN – European Heart Network) and the fresh fruit and vegetables sector (Freshfel). The cooperation has been established to provide members of the platform and the Directorate-General for Health of the European Commission with information on their work in relation to implementing the EU SFS.
