VISION
To be nationally and globally recognized as a premier center for unifying pineapple and other fruit exporters for shipment, shaping policy and providing relevant services to the fruit industry.

MISSION
To bring together operators in the pineapple industry and promote good agricultural practices and provide efficient, effective and economic logistics services.

FUNCTIONS
The basic functions of SPEG are:
  • Arrange sea-freight space on assigned vessels.
  • Consolidate pineapple cargo for vessel operators.
  • Co-ordinate shipping arrangements on behalf of its members.
  • Oversee loading of cargo at the port and prepare all documents covering exporters’ shipments.
  • Undertake lobbying of Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Service Providers on policies that will promote pineapple production and export.
  • Provides Technical support services in Good Agricultural Practices, and post harvest handling and food safety.
  • To undertake market promotion and provide market information services.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aims and objectives of the association are as follows:
  • To bring together exporters and producers / exporters of pineapples by means of sea freighting.
  • To arrange for and purchase sea-freight space and other inputs for pineapple exporters.
  • To ensure that only pineapple of the highest quality are exported from Ghana by maintaining on farm pre-shipment inspection at various locations.
  • To get its members to co-operate in the marketing of their produce both locally and overseas.


VARIETIES OF PINEAPPLE
Through the effort of exporting companies and with the support of Government of Ghana and other non-governmental organizations and donors, the following varieties of pineapple are now available from SPEG members in commercial quantities for export:-
A. MD 2
B. Queen Victoria
C. Smooth Cayenne
D. Sugarloaf

ORGANIZATION OF
SPEG is a professionally organized association with a functional secretariat with offices and a conference room in Accra as well as at the Tema Port.

POST HARVEST HANDLING
Farms have started investing in the acquisition of appropriate equipment for efficient post harvest handling that include modern automated packing lines and cooling equipment to ensure good quality and safe produce.

GLOBAL GAP COMPLIANCE
Through the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, member companies have adopted Global GAP practices, developed internal control systems and have successfully obtained certification to the Global GAP Integrated Farm Assurance Standards.

COLD CHAIN LOGISTICS
Ghana has completed the refurbishment of the export shed into a dedicated fruit terminal at the Tema sea port. The facility is already opened. The fully temperature-controlled ultra-modern facility covers a floor space of 4,400m² as well as housing a dedicated container-handling and plug-in platform.
